Power League-Springfield

In our efforts to improve and compete to win, we can often become our own worst critics.  I think that we could all share in some frustrations from this weekend, but first and foremost, I want to acknowledge the positive.

The highlight of the day was probably our match vs. Mt. Hood. I played some girls in positions they weren’t used to playing, and I was impressed with the teams’ collective response to this. I am continually amazed by these girls’ selfliness and the way they consistently put the team before themselves. I think that our serving went well inthis game along with our passing. We have improved on our third ball attack (down balls vs. free balls) and out of system sets. We are becoming much more aggressive on offense.

Now for what I think we can and WILL do better on. We definitely felt the absence of Kendal and Erin this weekend. I do not think we responded well to this, nor did we show up to the gym ready to play. We need to realize that when we put the CCJV jersey on, that means we are ready to go, ready to compete, no matter how early it is, no matter who is on the other side of the net. When we step on to the court, it is time to focus on the match ahead of us. What disappointed me most this weekend was not the win-loss record, it never is, it is the lack of focus. It was the balls the continued to drop between two people, not calling the ball, not being on base, going for the ball with one hand-those are things I refuse to tolerate because it is simply a lack of focus, not a lack of skill.

There is a drastic difference between the way we practice and the way we compete that I’m sure everyone can see. I do not get the same sense of conidence in competition that I feel from practice. We MUST be able to translate successes in practices into competition.

I asked the girls what they are afraid of-is it loosing? Me? Disappointing me? The answer was unanymously-disappointing me. My response to this was-let’s define what disappoints me: lack of effort, lack of heart, lack of teamwork. If we don’t win a single game the rest of the season, yet have all three of these things…I will be a happy camper. But I truly believe that if these things are present for every game…we won’t be loosing the way we have been.

I want everyone to know how unbelievably blessed I feel with this team (players and parents). I could not ask for a harder working, more fun group of girls. I care about every single one of those girls a great deal. That being said, I told the girls that I am just done being nice. From now on, I have to put the girls on the court that are going to get the job done, and that might mean some girls just don’t play..until they can prove to me in practice that they can beat that other person out..or that they can be a better leader.

That’s all I have for now. I’m looking forward to a good practice!

Thank you all SO MUCH for the blanket! I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!

With love,

April

Power League Debrief

“There is nothing so satisfying as to do that which people think you cannot”

We started off the day of our first Power League with this quote. I told the girls that today was a huge opportunity to go out and prove people wrong and to set the tone for the rest of the season. The team had set two main goals for the weekend: No ball hits the ground without 2 people going for it and communication on every ball.

When all was said and done, I definitely saw improvement this weekend. I especially noticed our communication being very strong in serve receive, out of system sets being executed well, and adjustments being made much more efficiently. The team showed up for the tournament ready to play. I was really happy with the level of determination and effort they put forth during pool play. We were all unfortunately left with an unquenched thirst for victory. I told them that what makes a team special and different is not their win or loss record, it is their ability to stay together as a family and NEVER give up. We must believe that hard work WILL pay off. The highlight of the day was defnitely our last match, our first victory!!

That being said, I left the tournament on Sunday feeling a little unimpressed, only because I know that we are capable of so much more. There were also a number of  mental errors being made over the course of the day-not knowing where you’re at on the court, not being at base on defense, missing the first serve, etc. I think we also need a lot of work on hitting consistency-while we made a lot of aggresive mistakes, they are mistakes nontheless, so we will be working on that in practice. I also noticed that as the day went on, our technique really broke down. On one hand, I don’t want the girls to overthink their technique and play too mechanically, but on the other, I do want them to be disciplined to practice what we have worked on.

I talked with a few of the girls about doing a team bonding night. I thought that maybe since we don’t have a tournament this weekend, they could plan something like this. I know that there were a few parents that were willing to coordinate something like that. I think that we took a few huge steps in becoming a team the past few weeks that could be builded on with a team night.

That’s it for now! See you at practice tomorrow!

Cowlitz Tournament Debrief

Overall, I was very pleased with how this weekend went! I think it was a learning experience for all of us, and an opportunity to see what we can build upon and what we can improve on. Here are a few things that I really was impressed with:

Teamwork, enthusiasm, and leadership: I know that it is not easy when you don’t get the outcomes that you want, but what’s more important to me is the way that we stay together as a team. Our team has what every coach dreams of, and cannot teach, which is a group of girls who think of the team before themselves, who are committed to working hard, and encourage one another constantly. The strength of our team really showed in the way we responded after our first few matches that didn’t go very well. The highlight of the day was definitely our third match in pool play, and the last set in our final match- which gave us all a glimpse of what we are capable of!

Technique execution: serve receive passing went well with communication in the seams and using our punch pass technique. This is very encouraging to me, because passers really have control of the offense. I think we will really develop offensively if we can have consistent passing.

Some things that I think we can learn from and improve on:

Making adjustments on serve receive on short serves, transitioning all the way off the net to hit, knowing what to do when the setter takes the first ball, serving consistency, and defensive effort/technique. These are all very fixable things and will just take repitition and disciplined use of technique.

This weekend was a great learning experience for me. As I coach, when something goes wrong, the first thing I want to do is look in the mirror and see if there is something I need to be doing differently. I’m just very thankful to have a group of young ladies that are so coachable and so fun to be around! Looking forward to this weekend! Thanks again to the parents for being so supportive and helpful with everything. I brag about you guys to anyone that will listen (I’m serious). My schedule has been pretty hectic, so I’ve ran a little late to a few practices, which I am very sorry for. I also sincerely appreciate your patience on the practice venue situation, with scheduling and weather, it has been quite a challenge for everyone!

If you haven’t heard, practice tomorrow is at 8 o’clock at Heritage. Our communicator extraordinaire-Jane Cook-has sent out an e-mail that you should have gotten by now.

See you there!
